Dividend Payments
Foreign holders of Russia-linked securities (shares, bonds, depositary receipts) have faced restrictions on receiving dividends and coupons due to international sanctions and Russian countermeasures.
Applications may be submitted to NSD for dividend and coupon payments (current and past, 2022–2024). If approved, payments are made to ruble accounts in Russia — either standard accounts or restricted “C-type” accounts, depending on investor status (“friendly” or “unfriendly” under Russian law).
Redomiciliation
Many companies operating in Russia but registered abroad (e.g., X5, Yandex, Ozon, RUGR) have lost the ability to manage Russian subsidiaries and distribute dividends abroad.
The Russian government initiated redomiciliation, requiring new local issuers to be established in Russia. Foreign investors must exchange their foreign shares for new Russian shares. However, foreign brokers often refuse transfers, requiring extensive documentation proving ownership, identity, and custody chain details.
Failure to participate in time-limited exchanges leaves investors with worthless foreign securities.
